At least 67 Palestinians killed in northern Gaza after Israeli forces opened fire near an aid convoy, according to the Hamas-run health ministry. The tragedy happened as hundreds of people gathered in hopes of receiving food.
The incident took place near a UN aid convoy operated by the World Food Programme (WFP). The convoy had just crossed into Gaza from Israel. It was made up of 25 trucks carrying much-needed food supplies.
The WFP said large crowds of starving civilians met the trucks. Soon after, the area came under gunfire. The organization expressed deep concern over the safety of civilians and humanitarian workers.
According to Gaza’s health ministry, dozens were killed and many more injured. The ministry said people waiting for aid were already in a state of extreme hunger and exhaustion. It warned that the humanitarian crisis in Gaza is worsening by the day.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) responded by saying its troops fired only warning shots. The IDF claimed they were trying to remove what they called an “immediate threat.” It disputed the reported death toll shared by Gaza authorities.
This is not the first time aid distribution in Gaza has ended in tragedy. The ongoing war and blockade have created severe shortages of food, water, and medicine. Many people now depend entirely on international aid to survive.
The UN and other global bodies have repeatedly called for the safe passage of aid into Gaza. But access remains limited due to ongoing conflict and security concerns. Convoys often face delays, looting, and attacks.
On Saturday, Gaza’s health officials said more people are showing up at hospitals with signs of starvation. Many children and the elderly are reported to be severely malnourished.
Currently, international aid groups are urging both sides to respect international humanitarian law. They emphasize the need to protect civilians and ensure the safe delivery of aid.
The recent attack highlights the dangers facing aid workers and civilians in conflict zones. It also raises more pressure on the international community to find a solution to the Gaza crisis.
