Automated Tax Filing System Launched for Salaried Class in Pakistan

Automated tax filing system

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has launched a new automated tax filing system aimed at simplifying tax returns for the salaried class in Pakistan. This digital system is part of a broader reform effort to modernize tax collection and improve ease of filing.

The new system features an interactive return form with eight digital windows. Each window has a single input column and question prompt, guiding users through the process step by step. By entering basic details like employer name or bank account information, the form automatically populates relevant tax data, including deductions and closing balances.

The system uses the filer’s CNIC to pull data on purchases and withholding taxes, reducing the need for manual input. This integration ensures that all relevant financial records are captured in one place, making the process quicker and more transparent.

The form is currently available in English, with Urdu, Sindhi, and Pashto versions to follow soon. Punjabi and Balochi translations will be released later.

Under existing laws, individual taxpayers are required to submit returns by September 30. The new digital platform aims to make this process easier, especially for salaried individuals.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed the FBR to prioritize citizen convenience and accelerate digital reforms. He has also asked for income tax refunds under Rs50,000 to be processed within one month of filing. An estimated Rs10 billion will be disbursed under this initiative.

The PM emphasized transparency and efficiency in tax processes, calling for third-party validation and the establishment of a helpline to assist users. He also highlighted the role of artificial intelligence in tax assessments and the importance of public awareness campaigns to support digital adoption.

This move aligns with the government’s wider strategy to digitize the economy and improve financial transparency. As part of these reforms, digital invoicing, customs automation, and a national payments index are also being introduced.
