PIMA Launches Hepatitis Awareness Campaign Across Pakistan

The Pakistan Islamic Medical Association (PIMA) has launched a nationwide hepatitis awareness campaign to mark World Hepatitis Day, observed on July 28. The initiative aims to educate the public and healthcare professionals about the dangers of hepatitis and how to prevent its spread.

The campaign includes a series of awareness walks, seminars, free screening camps, and continuing medical education (CME) sessions. These activities will take place in various cities across Pakistan to reach as many people as possible.

On Saturday, PIMA Islamabad organized a free medical camp in collaboration with the National Press Club. The camp provided free screening for Hepatitis B and C, Hepatitis B vaccinations, specialist consultations, and essential lab tests.

Speaking at the event, Professor Dr Atif Hafeez Siddiqui, Central President of PIMA, shared alarming statistics. He stated that nearly 90% of hepatitis-infected individuals in Pakistan do not know they are carrying the virus. He stressed that early testing is vital for treatment and preventing further complications.

Dr Siddiqui also explained how the disease spreads. Hepatitis A and E are transmitted through contaminated food and water, while Hepatitis B, C, and D spread through infected syringes, surgical tools, and unsafe blood transfusions.

One major cause of the rising infection rate, he noted, is the reuse of syringes and unsterilized medical instruments. He urged the public and healthcare workers to take serious precautions.

PIMA’s campaign is part of a broader national effort to raise awareness and encourage early detection and treatment. With millions at risk, such actions are seen as vital in controlling the spread of hepatitis and preventing long-term damage like liver cancer.

By focusing on education, free testing, and expert consultations, PIMA hopes to reduce the burden of hepatitis in Pakistan.
