Pakistan Launches National AI Fund to Boost Tech Innovation

The federal government has approved the establishment of the National Artificial Intelligence Fund (NAIF) to support the growth of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in the country.

According to official documents, 30 percent of Ignite’s Research and Development Fund will be allocated to NAIF. The fund aims to support innovative projects and expand AI capabilities across Pakistan.

The decision is part of the government’s broader plan to promote emerging technologies and strengthen Pakistan’s digital economy.

As part of this initiative, the government will set up a network of AI Centers of Excellence in major cities, including Islamabad, Karachi, and Lahore. These centers will serve as innovation hubs and support research, training, and the development of AI-based solutions.

The documents also highlight proposals for the creation of an Innovation Fund and a Venture Fund, both designed to encourage private-sector involvement in AI and accelerate the commercialization of research.

In addition, the government plans to launch a National AI Skill Development Program, aimed at training 200,000 individuals annually. This program will be implemented through collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Training, provincial governments, and private organizations.

The objective is to enhance capacity in AI and meet the growing demand for skilled professionals in the sector.

A National High-Tech Internship Program is also being introduced. This will offer hands-on experience to young professionals in AI and related fields.

The announcement comes shortly after the federal cabinet approved the National AI Policy 2025. The policy outlines a comprehensive roadmap for creating a complete AI ecosystem in Pakistan.

Under the policy, the government plans to:

  • Train 1 million AI professionals by 2030
  • Launch 50,000 AI-driven civic projects
  • Develop 1,000 local AI products within five years

Speaking on the occasion, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said that empowering youth with AI education and skills is a national priority.

“Our youth are Pakistan’s greatest asset. Providing them with education, skills, and equal opportunities in AI is a top priority,” he stated.

The policy also emphasizes the use of AI to improve public services, enhance governance, and drive economic growth.

The National Artificial Intelligence Fund is expected to play a central role in achieving these objectives by offering financial and technical support to AI initiatives nationwide.

The fund is part of Pakistan’s efforts to keep pace with global advancements in artificial intelligence and to position the country as a regional leader in the technology sector.
