Heavy Rain Likely Across Punjab in Next 24 Hours: PDMA Alert

Heavy Rain Likely Across Punjab in Next 24 Hours | PDMA Alert

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has forecast widespread rainfall across most districts of Punjab within the next 24 hours. This marks the continuation of the sixth spell of the monsoon season, expected to last until August 7.

According to the PDMA spokesperson, district administrations have been instructed to remain on high alert due to the potential impact of the upcoming rainfall.

Director General PDMA, Irfan Ali Kathia, confirmed that low-level flooding is currently being reported in the Indus River at Tarbela. However, water flow at Kalabagh, Chashma, and Taunsa remains within normal levels. The water levels in the Chenab, Jhelum, Ravi, and Sutlej rivers are also reported to be stable.

Tarbela Dam is presently filled up to 95% of its total capacity, while Mangla Dam has reached 62%. The PDMA stated that hill torrents and streams connected to the major rivers are currently flowing normally and are not posing any immediate threat.

The PDMA also reported casualties caused by monsoon-related incidents this year. A total of 164 people have lost their lives across Punjab. Additionally, three people sustained injuries in rain-related accidents during the past 24 hours.

Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a hydrological alert for River Sutlej. According to the National Emergencies Operation Center (NEOC), monsoon currents are actively affecting the upper and central regions of the country. A westerly trough also persists over the northern parts.

As a result, scattered heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected between August 5 and 7. This rainfall may contribute to a rise in river flows, particularly in the Sutlej River.

The NEOC reported that the discharge of the Sutlej River at Ferozepur (Ganda Singh Wala) rose significantly on August 5. The flow increased from 28,657 to 33,653 cusecs within an hour, indicating a sharp upward trend.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely. The public is advised to stay alert, especially in low-lying and flood-prone areas. Safety instructions and weather updates are being issued regularly by relevant departments.

Emergency teams remain on standby to handle any adverse situation. Citizens are encouraged to follow official guidelines and avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rains.
