Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called for a national policy to address Pakistan’s growing population, which he termed a serious challenge to development.
Chairing a high-level meeting in Islamabad on Thursday, the prime minister said the current 2.55% annual growth rate is alarming. He emphasized the urgent need for a coordinated and long-term strategy at the national level.
“Our youth are our greatest asset,” PM Shehbaz said. “We need to prepare them to play a productive role in the economy.”
He noted that the government is already taking steps to empower young people. These include programs focused on skill development and job creation. He also stressed that women’s participation in the workforce is essential for economic growth.
“Women make up a large part of our human capital. We must create more employment opportunities for them,” he said.
To move forward, the prime minister ordered the formation of a special committee. This group will work closely with provincial governments to draft a detailed and effective population policy.
He also called for a nationwide awareness campaign. Its goal will be to inform citizens about the effects of unchecked population growth and its impact on sustainable development.
Officials at the meeting presented several recommendations. They agreed that the solution must involve provinces and engage communities at the local level.
The meeting was attended by key cabinet members, including the ministers for planning, education, law, and information. Senior government officials from various departments were also present.
PM Shehbaz concluded by saying that a unified national response is essential. He urged all stakeholders to contribute actively to managing population-related issues.
