KARACHI: A special Azadi Safari Train departed from Karachi City Station for Tharparkar on Wednesday as part of Pakistan’s Independence Day celebrations.
The train, previously called the Desert Safari Train, carried more than 100 passengers. Pakistan Railways said it will return to Karachi on August 14.
The route includes Karachi, Hyderabad, Mirpurkhas, and Umerkot before reaching Tharparkar.
Senior Provincial Minister Sharjeel Memon and Minister for Culture and Tourism Syed Zulfiqar Ali Shah attended the departure ceremony. The event was held under the theme “Battle for Truth.”
A 78-pound cake was cut during the ceremony. Civil society members, showbiz personalities, and political figures also attended.
Speaking at the event, Zulfiqar Ali Shah said the train was arranged to celebrate Independence Day in a grand and memorable way. He said it would send a message of peace and unity.
He paid tribute to the sacrifices of Pakistan’s founders and said the nation must continue to value the achievements of independence.
Earlier, MD Tourism Fayyaz Shah had briefed officials about the Azadi Train on August 7.
The journey is aimed at promoting tourism and cultural heritage in Sindh while marking the national celebrations.
