QUETTA – A university professor in Balochistan has been arrested for allegedly helping the banned Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) in its militant activities across the province.
The suspect has been identified as Dr. Usman Qazi, a Grade-18 lecturer at the Balochistan University of Information Technology and Management Sciences (BUITEMS). In a video statement released by officials, Dr. Qazi admitted to having links with the BLA and assisting the group in multiple operations.
Dr. Qazi revealed that he first came into contact with BLA members during an academic visit. He said he was later approached by a senior militant known as Dr. Hebtan alias Kalak, who introduced him to BLA commander Bashir Zeb. According to his statement, he was given the code name “Amir” and assigned several tasks within the group.
The professor confessed that his first duty was providing medical help to BLA commander Sher Dil. He further admitted to sheltering two militants at his home in November. One of them later carried out the deadly Quetta Railway Station suicide bombing, which killed dozens of people.
He also disclosed that he supplied a pistol to a woman linked with the organization for use in targeted killings. Another militant, identified as Nauman alias Firq, stayed at his residence for eight days before being handed over to another commander. Dr. Qazi said this individual was later instructed to conduct a planned attack during Independence Day celebrations on August 14.
Officials said the arrest of the professor prevented a major act of terrorism in Quetta. The confession highlights how banned groups recruit individuals even from respected institutions. Authorities have confirmed that further investigations are underway to track down the wider network.
The case has sparked widespread concern, with security agencies stressing the need for vigilance against extremist influence within academic and professional circles.
