Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan has instructed his party members to resign from all parliamentary committees. This was confirmed by his sister, Aleema Khan, during a press briefing outside Adiala Jail on Tuesday.
Aleema stated that Imran Khan ordered all party members to submit their resignations from standing committees in the National Assembly. She added that the PTI founder also gave instructions to Chairman Barrister Gohar and Secretary-General Salman Akram Raja regarding the upcoming by-elections. According to Aleema, Imran Khan opposed participation in these elections, saying it would only provide legal validation to the polls.
Earlier, Aleema had highlighted a disagreement within the PTI leadership over the by-elections. Sources revealed that 13 members of the political committee supported contesting the polls, while 9 were against it. The split reportedly left Raja disheartened, leading him to offer his resignation from the key party role, although Imran Khan later refused to accept it.
In addition, Imran Khan has nominated Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM) chief Allama Nasir Abbas and Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP) Chairman Mahmood Khan Achakzai as opposition leaders in the Senate and National Assembly, respectively. He has also instructed the party to boycott the upcoming by-elections.
During the meeting, Aleema shared that Imran Khan expressed concern over his wife Bushra Bibi’s situation and was briefed about the arrests of Shershah and Shahrez, linked to the May 9, 2023 riots. She noted that Imran Khan described these punishments and disqualifications as unprecedented in Pakistan’s history.
Aleema also mentioned that the PTI founder expressed disappointment over the state of cricket under Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman Mohsin Naqvi and the recent devastation caused by floods in Buner and other areas. On health matters, she confirmed that Imran Khan is in good condition, though he has an eye issue for which medical treatment is planned.
This latest directive underscores a major shift in PTI’s political strategy, signaling a firm stance against current parliamentary procedures. The focus on the PTI parliamentary committees resignation marks a critical moment in the party’s ongoing political maneuvers.
