Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab has unveiled the first phase of electric bikes for Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) employees. This initiative aims to promote sustainable and cost-effective urban mobility in the city.
In collaboration with a private company, KMC has purchased 20 electric bikes. The mayor noted that while the market price of each bike was around Rs. 240,000, they were procured for Rs. 215,000 under the agreement. The first bikes will be allocated to dispatch riders, with women employees set to receive EV bikes in upcoming phases.
To support the program, KMC has already established a charging station at its headquarters. Additional stations will be installed across the city. Wahab emphasized that all charging stations will be monitored through a mobile application to maintain transparency and efficiency.
This initiative positions KMC as the first local council in Pakistan to transition to electric bikes. Wahab highlighted that the corporation is also the only civic body operating entirely on solar energy. He explained that the project is a responsible move to reduce expenses and lower the city’s carbon footprint, contributing to efforts against global warming.
The mayor described the project as a significant step towards integrating smart technology, cost-saving solutions, and environment-friendly practices into city services. By adopting KMC EV bikes, the corporation hopes to set a precedent for other municipalities in Pakistan.
Experts say such green initiatives not only reduce pollution but also encourage modern, efficient urban transport. Public interest in the program has grown, with social media sharing updates and images of the new electric bikes in action.
As Karachi faces increasing environmental and traffic challenges, projects like this can help improve city management while promoting sustainability. The KMC EV bikes program reflects a growing global trend of replacing fuel-powered vehicles with electric alternatives in urban areas.
