Brussels: Belgium has announced it will recognise the State of Palestine at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly in September. The decision was confirmed by Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot on Tuesday.
Prevot stated on X that Belgium’s recognition of Palestine comes alongside firm sanctions against the Israeli government. He emphasized that the move aims to ensure Israel respects international and humanitarian law, not to punish the Israeli people.
The announcement follows similar steps by other Western nations. In July, French President Emmanuel Macron declared that France would recognise a Palestinian state at the UN session scheduled from September 9 to 23 in New York. Several countries have since encouraged others to take similar action.
Prevot highlighted the humanitarian situation in Gaza as a key reason behind Belgium’s decision. He cited the ongoing Israeli offensives that have displaced much of the population and led the UN to declare a famine in the region.
“In the face of violence by Israel that violates international law, Belgium had to take strong measures to pressure the Israeli government and Hamas,” Prevot said.
Belgium’s sanctions will specifically target goods produced in Israeli-occupied territories. The measures are intended to support international law and humanitarian standards, while also pushing for a change in the situation on the ground.
The move marks a significant development in Europe’s stance on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. It aligns Belgium with other nations that advocate for Palestinian statehood and greater international accountability.
Political analysts note that Belgium’s recognition could influence discussions at the UN and encourage other countries to consider similar steps. The decision reflects growing international concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the need for diplomatic solutions.
By taking these measures, Belgium aims to highlight the importance of international law while responding to urgent humanitarian challenges.
