Cash App has agreed to a $12.5 million class action settlement following claims it sent unwanted promotional messages to residents of Washington State. The case centers on the company’s referral program, which allegedly violated privacy and consumer protection laws.
The lawsuit, filed in November 2023, accused Cash App’s parent company, Block Inc., of sending referral texts without getting users’ consent. These texts promoted a cash reward program encouraging users to invite friends. However, many recipients said they never opted in.
According to the claim, the messages breached both the Washington Consumer Protection Act and the state’s Commercial Electronic Mail Act.
People who lived in Washington and received one or more Cash App referral texts between November 14, 2019, and a yet-to-be-confirmed end date may be eligible for compensation. This includes individuals who do not have a Cash App account.
Claimants will be able to file online once the official claims website is launched. Notifications will be sent by email, text, or post to those who qualify.
The Cash App referral lawsuit settlement covers legal and administrative fees, so the actual payout per person depends on the number of valid claims. Estimated payments range from $88 to $147.
For example:
- If 100,000 people file valid claims, each may get around $147.
- If 200,000 file, the amount may decrease to about $88 per person.
Compensation will be available through PayPal, Venmo, or by check. No proof of a Cash App account is required, only confirmation that an unsolicited message was received on a Washington phone number.
While some social media users in Pakistan have discussed the Pakistan real cash app referral code, this lawsuit applies only to Washington residents and has no connection to international referral programs.
The cash app referral lawsuit settlement payout date has not been finalized, but it will be announced once the claims portal goes live. Eligible individuals are advised to file as soon as they are notified.
