CDA to Remove Controversial Sculpture Following Public Backlash

CDA controversial sculpture

The CDA controversial sculpture placed on Margalla Avenue is being taken down after facing heavy criticism on social media.

The sculpture, which shows two golden hands holding spheres, quickly became the subject of online jokes and memes. Many users questioned its meaning, calling it unclear and lacking in artistic value. The design was seen by many as unsuitable for public display in the federal capital.

On Monday, a spokesperson for the Capital Development Authority (CDA) confirmed the sculpture’s removal. The official said the installation did not receive approval from the relevant CDA department before it was placed.

According to reports, the sculpture was part of a corporate social responsibility (CSR) effort by a private real estate company. It was meant to add visual appeal to the area, but it drew the opposite reaction from the public.

The CDA has not clarified whether the removal decision came from within the authority or under instructions from higher officials. There are also questions about how such a structure was placed without formal approval.

Efforts to take down the sculpture began earlier this week. A crane was used, but bad weather delayed the process. For now, the structure has been covered with a large cloth. The CDA expects full removal to be completed soon.

Many social media users demanded accountability and urged the authority to be more careful about public installations in the future. Some also raised concerns about the CDA controversial sculpture value, questioning how resources were allocated.

The incident has sparked broader discussion about public art in Islamabad and the need for proper oversight.

It also raised the question: CDA comes under which ministry? The answer is the Ministry of Interior, which oversees its operations.

The CDA has not issued further comments but said it will ensure that future projects meet design and approval standards.
