Beijing confirmed on Thursday that a senior official will lead a China delegation to the US for trade talks this week. The visit is seen as an important step in easing tensions between the world’s two largest economies.
Li Chenggang, China’s International Trade Representative and vice minister of commerce, will head the delegation. He is scheduled to meet senior US officials in Washington. The commerce ministry stated that Beijing is ready to work with Washington to resolve disputes through dialogue and consultation.
Trade tensions between the United States and China have cooled in recent months. Earlier this year, both countries imposed heavy tariffs on each other’s goods, at times reaching triple digits. This created uncertainty for global supply chains and forced importers to halt shipments.
In April, the two sides agreed on a temporary truce. Tariffs were reduced to 30 percent on US goods and 10 percent on Chinese products. The arrangement remains fragile, but both governments have since delayed the reimposition of higher tariffs until November 10.
US President Donald Trump also signaled optimism this week. He said he expects to visit China later this year and expressed hope for a stronger relationship. His remarks came just days before Li’s scheduled talks in Washington.
Despite progress, challenges remain. Washington previously accused Beijing of failing to meet certain commitments, including export licenses for rare earths. These minerals are critical for industries such as defense, electronics, and automotive manufacturing. However, both sides have since pledged to move forward with cooperation.
Economic interests are also driving talks. Reports suggest Boeing is negotiating the sale of up to 500 aircraft to Chinese buyers. Analysts say such a deal would depend on a stable long-term trade agreement between the two countries.
The upcoming discussions highlight how vital cooperation is for global trade. Both nations face pressure to secure agreements that benefit industries at home while reducing uncertainty worldwide. The success of the China delegation trade talks US could shape the next phase of economic relations.
