Cleveland Guardians Respond to Trump’s Name Change Demand

The Cleveland Guardians have responded after former President Donald Trump publicly called for the team to return to its old name, the Cleveland Indians.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump urged the franchise to bring back the “Indians” moniker. He also asked the NFL’s Washington Commanders to revert to their previous name, the “Redskins.” Trump claimed that many Native Americans want these historic names restored. He argued that their cultural pride and history are being erased.

Trump’s post read, “The Washington ‘Whatever’s’ should immediately change their name back to the Washington Redskins. There is a big clamoring for this. Likewise, the Cleveland Indians… Our great Indian people, in massive numbers, want this to happen.”

Despite Trump’s strong words, the Guardians have shown no interest in making any changes.

Chris Antonetti, president of baseball operations for the Guardians, commented on the matter on Sunday. He said the team is focused on its current identity and future growth.

“I’m not really tracking it or paying much attention,” Antonetti told reporters. “But I know there are different opinions on the decision. We made the change a few years ago, and we’ve been working to build the Guardians brand. We’re excited about what lies ahead.”

The Guardians officially adopted their current name in 2021. Before that, they were known as the Cleveland Indians from 1915 to 2020. The name change came after years of public debate and pressure from groups advocating for more culturally respectful branding.

The franchise has also removed its old “Chief Wahoo” logo, which was criticized for being offensive. The new branding reflects a more inclusive and modern identity for the team.

Interestingly, Trump once attempted to buy the Cleveland team in 1983. His offer was declined, and the team was eventually sold to real estate developer Richard Jacobs.

As of now, the Cleveland Guardians are in their fourth season under the new name. The organization remains committed to its current brand and does not appear to be considering any name reversal.
