Heavy Rain in Karachi Disrupts Flight Operations

KARACHI: Heavy rainfall in Karachi has disrupted flight operations at Jinnah International Airport, affecting both domestic and international travel. The downpour led to several delays, with airlines struggling to maintain their schedules.

According to airport officials, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flight PK-300 to Islamabad took off 30 minutes late. Fly Jinnah’s flight 670, also bound for Islamabad, departed an hour behind schedule at 8:00 am. AirSial’s early morning flight to Islamabad, originally set for 7:00 am, was still grounded by the time of reporting.

PIA’s Karachi to Lahore flight PK-302 left at 8:30 am after a delay of half an hour. Airport sources further confirmed that three international flights arriving in Karachi were also affected by the weather conditions. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation as heavy rain continues to impact air traffic.

The city witnessed light showers overnight, which intensified into heavy rainfall by early Tuesday morning. Areas hit hardest include Tariq Road, Azizabad, Shahrah-e-Quaideen, Boat Basin, Liaquatabad, Hassan Square, Clifton, Defence, Malir, Landhi, Korangi, and Shahrah-e-Faisal. Several neighborhoods such as North Nazimabad, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Federal B Area, and Surjani Town also experienced intense showers, with some reporting thunderstorms.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast further heavy rain across northern regions, including Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, Murree, and Galiyat. Officials have also warned of possible urban flooding in low-lying areas of Karachi, Lahore, Rawalpindi, Islamabad, and parts of Balochistan and Sindh.

With the monsoon system strengthening, Karachi disrupts flight operations repeatedly, highlighting the impact of extreme weather on city infrastructure. Authorities continue to issue advisories as residents brace for more rain in the coming days.
