Pakistan Railways has announced plans to start a new shuttle train between Islamabad and Rawalpindi. The service will use modern Diesel Multiple Units (DMUs) to improve travel convenience for daily commuters.
The decision was finalized on August 26, 2025, after a meeting of the Interior and Railways ministries at the Pakistan Railways headquarters in Lahore. Officials said the move is aimed at offering better travel facilities for passengers who frequently use the busy twin-cities route.
According to the Railways Ministry, the Islamabad–Rawalpindi train service will not only enhance connectivity but also reduce pressure on road transport. The use of DMUs, known for faster turnaround and energy efficiency, marks a step forward in modernizing the country’s railway operations.
Security arrangements were also discussed during the meeting. The Interior Ministry has agreed to deploy Federal Constabulary (FC) troops to support Pakistan Railways. Their duties will include securing railway tracks, protecting rolling stock, and assisting in reclaiming railway land from encroachments. These measures are expected to make travel safer and more reliable for passengers.
The new shuttle service is part of a broader plan to upgrade Pakistan’s railway network. Authorities are working on introducing new train services and improving infrastructure in other regions as well.
