Authorities in Pakistan have taken drastic action to protect Jhang city from severe flooding. Three points of a railway line were detonated to redirect floodwaters away from populated areas. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) confirmed the operation, emphasizing that it aimed to safeguard residents and villages at risk.
The explosions were carried out at the Rawaz Bridge, which helped divert about 150,000 cusecs of floodwater. Prior to this, the flow at the Jhang Bridge had surged to a dangerous 496,000 cusecs. The quick response prevented floodwaters from affecting over 30 villages.
In addition to the railway line detonations, authorities also broke a protective barrier of the Chenab River near Jhang. This step reduced pressure on the Trimmu Headworks and helped manage the flood’s impact. A similar operation had previously been conducted at Head Qadirabad when water levels reached 935,000 cusecs, far above the usual 800,000 cusecs.
The Pakistan Army and local administration worked together during the operation, using precise detonators to ensure controlled redirection of water. Rescue teams evacuated residents from the most affected areas and remain on high alert across Faisalabad, Chiniot, and Jhang districts.
Meanwhile, water from the Chenab River has also flooded parts of the Jhang–Chiniot road. This has forced additional evacuations and temporary closures to protect citizens. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely.
The Jhang flood diversion comes amid widespread flooding in Punjab. Earlier, the Ravi River caused severe flooding in Lahore, affecting localities including Badru Pind, Talluq Pura, Mehna Wal, Chuhng, and Theme Park. Families displaced by the floods moved to the Lahore–Islamabad Motorway for safety.
Officials urge residents in flood-prone areas to follow safety instructions and remain cautious as rivers continue to swell. The combined efforts of NDMA, local authorities, and the military have been crucial in managing the crisis and minimizing damage.
