KARACHI – More than 90 people have been arrested in Karachi for aerial firing during Independence Day celebrations, police confirmed on Thursday. The incidents, which occurred on August 14, left three people dead and 82 injured across the city.
A police spokesperson said 68 illegal weapons were seized from the suspects. Over 100 cases have been registered, including charges of murder and attempted murder.
The violence was reported in different parts of the city. East Zone recorded 30 injuries, West Zone had 43, and South Zone reported 12. Victims included 51 men, 24 women, six boys, and one girl.
In one of the most tragic incidents, an eight-year-old girl in Azizabad was killed after being struck in the head by a stray bullet. In separate cases, an elderly man in Korangi and another in Lyari died from gunshot wounds to the head and neck.
Police stated that many of the injured were bystanders caught in the crossfire of celebratory gunfire. The practice of aerial firing during national celebrations has long been a safety concern in Karachi, with authorities warning against it each year.
Sindh Inspector General Ghulam Nabi Memon took notice of the incidents, calling the loss of life unacceptable. “Celebrating does not mean taking someone’s life,” he said. He urged citizens to celebrate in a safe and responsible manner, without endangering others.
Officials have vowed strict action against those involved, promising that all suspects will face legal consequences. Authorities also appealed to the public to report any such illegal activity to the police to prevent future tragedies.
The events have sparked renewed debate over the dangers of celebratory gunfire and the need for stricter enforcement of laws. Citizens and rights groups are calling for awareness campaigns to discourage the dangerous practice during national festivities.
