Macron suggests Geneva hosts Putin-Zelensky summit

French President Emmanuel Macron has proposed Geneva as a possible location for an upcoming summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The suggestion comes after both leaders held separate talks with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington.

In an interview with French channel LCI, Macron explained that the meeting should take place in a neutral country. “Maybe Switzerland, I’m pushing for Geneva, or another country,” he said. He noted that previous rounds of negotiations between Russia and Ukraine were held in Istanbul in 2022.

Macron emphasized that European leaders, including France and Britain, are staying closely involved in the process. He confirmed that a meeting with Ukraine’s allies would be held to share updates from the Washington talks. Discussions largely focused on providing long-term security guarantees for Kyiv, which remains central to any peace framework.

Following this, French and American officials are expected to begin detailed work on next steps. According to Macron, diplomatic advisers, ministers, and military chiefs will coordinate on what commitments each country is willing to make.

The French president also addressed questions about potential territorial concessions by Ukraine. He made clear that any decisions on this matter rest with Kyiv. “Ukraine will make the concessions it deems just and right,” Macron stated. However, he warned against setting dangerous precedents. Recognizing territory seized by force, he said, could open “a Pandora’s box” in international law.

The proposed summit reflects renewed international efforts to encourage dialogue between Moscow and Kyiv. By suggesting Geneva, Macron highlighted the importance of a neutral venue that could host sensitive discussions. Whether such a meeting leads to progress remains uncertain, but the diplomatic push signals growing urgency among European leaders.
