Pakistan has developed its first-ever vaccine to prevent breast cancer. The breakthrough was announced in Lahore on Monday, with health officials calling it a major step for the country’s medical sector.
The vaccine has been prepared by the Institute of Public Health Punjab. According to experts, it is designed to stop the spread of breast cancer among women, which remains one of the leading causes of death worldwide.
Officials explained that the vaccine works by targeting the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), which is linked to the disease. Medical experts believe this advancement could be a milestone for Pakistan’s healthcare system.
Punjab Finance Minister Mujtaba Shuja said the provincial government has prioritized health initiatives. He added that the creation of this Papilloma vaccine by local scientists is a remarkable achievement for the country.
Professor Dr. Javed Akram, a leading medical specialist, said the new vaccine could offer long-term protection. He explained that three doses should be given to girls at the age of 12. This, he noted, would provide lifelong safety against breast cancer.
The development comes as global pharmaceutical companies also continue to work on breast cancer treatments. Recently, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Datroway, a precision drug by AstraZeneca and Daiichi Sankyo, for advanced breast cancer patients. Unlike traditional chemotherapy, the drug is designed to target cancer cells while sparing healthy tissue.
While the international medical community is making progress in treatment, Pakistan’s effort focuses on prevention. Experts say this local innovation could change how breast cancer is managed in the region and potentially save thousands of lives in the future.
