Petrol Prices Likely to Drop in Pakistan from September 1

ISLAMABAD: Petrol prices in Pakistan are expected to fall starting September 1, offering some relief to consumers. The reduction could be up to Rs 3.13 per litre for certain fuels, according to the authorities.

Sources indicate that petrol may see a modest drop of 61 paisas per litre. High-speed diesel could experience a larger decrease of Rs3.13 per litre. Meanwhile, kerosene oil is likely to become cheaper by Rs1.57 per litre, and light diesel may go down by Rs2.61 per litre.

The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) will submit its calculations to the Petroleum Division on August 31. The Prime Minister’s approval will follow, after which the new prices for petrol, diesel, and other fuels will be officially implemented.

Earlier, the federal government announced petrol and diesel rates for the fortnight starting August 16, 2025. Petrol prices remained unchanged at Rs264.61 per litre. High-speed diesel dropped by Rs12.84 to Rs272.99 per litre. Kerosene oil fell by Rs7.19 to Rs178.27, and light diesel decreased by Rs8.20 to Rs162.37.

Despite the reductions, the public may not see full relief. The government increased the petroleum levy on petrol and diesel by Rs2.50 per litre. Diesel’s levy rose from Rs74.51 to Rs77.01, while petrol’s levy went from Rs75.52 to Rs78.02 per litre. A climate support levy of Rs2.50 per litre has also been added to both fuels.

Other charges, including dealers’ and distributors’ margins, remain fixed. The sales tax on petrol and diesel continues to be zero. These adjustments mean that while petrol prices will drop, the overall relief for consumers will be limited.

The anticipated petrol price reduction in Pakistan is expected to ease fuel costs slightly and may offer some relief to households and businesses dealing with high energy expenses.
