Dams to Be Built in Consultation with Provinces: PM Shehbaz

PM Shehbaz: Dams in Consultation with Provinces

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced a new strategy to strengthen Pakistan’s water management system. He said dams will be constructed across the country through full coordination with provinces, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan.

Speaking on Friday, the Prime Minister stressed that dams in consultation with all stakeholders were vital to address the growing impacts of climate change. He noted that unpredictable weather and heavy monsoon rains have made the development of reservoirs a national priority.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, officials are working on a draft policy to improve preparedness against climate-related disasters. The plan focuses on flood control, timely responses to emergencies, and stronger coordination between federal and provincial governments. Once the immediate crisis passes, a high-level meeting will be held with the chief ministers of all four provinces, along with leaders from AJK and Gilgit-Baltistan.

Shehbaz Sharif underlined that climate change is a shared challenge and requires united action. He said cooperation between provinces and the federal government was the only way to safeguard communities and reduce disaster risks.

In addition to long-term measures, the Prime Minister praised efforts by citizens to help those already suffering from recent floods. He highlighted the example of Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) employees, who donated one day’s salary, amounting to Rs20 million, for flood relief. He called their contribution a sign of solidarity and an example for others.

The Prime Minister reaffirmed that the government is fully committed to supporting all flood-affected people. He assured that resources are being utilized to provide relief and restore normal life in the worst-hit areas.

The announcement comes as Pakistan faces severe flooding in parts of Punjab and other regions. Experts warn that the country must urgently expand water storage capacity to protect agriculture, infrastructure, and lives.
