PM Shehbaz Launches 10M BISP Digital Wallets

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Monday launched 10 million digital wallets for BISP beneficiaries, marking a major step toward financial inclusion and a cashless economy in Pakistan.

During a ceremony attended by federal ministers, BISP officials, and international partners like GIZ, PM Shehbaz activated the digital wallet system with a symbolic palm touch. He praised the initiative as a historic move to ensure transparency and direct access to financial assistance for deserving families.

“The digital wallet system empowers BISP beneficiaries with safe, transparent, and direct support,” PM Shehbaz said. He described the project as inspired by the vision of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto and congratulated BISP Chairperson Senator Rubina Khalid, the BISP team, and partner organizations for their efforts.

The Prime Minister emphasized that BISP has always played a crucial role in poverty alleviation and employment generation. He called for further expansion of the program, linking assistance to education and health initiatives to benefit children and families more effectively.

PM Shehbaz highlighted the importance of digital transactions, noting that during Ramazan, 78% of relief payments were successfully disbursed through digital channels. He added that cashless payments reduce corruption, save time, and improve efficiency, helping Pakistan progress faster.

Under his direction, a high-level committee was formed to ensure transparency in the system. The digital wallets will use beneficiaries’ CNICs and biometric verification to prevent identity fraud. Additionally, 10 million free SIM cards are being distributed, with the first phase launched in Hyderabad, Sukkur, and Rahim Yar Khan in partnership with Jazz/Mobilink.

Senator Rubina Khalid called the launch an important milestone in Pakistan’s social protection efforts. She said linking benefits to women’s CNICs ensures recognition and inclusion in the national database. She added that digital literacy programs will support women unfamiliar with technology, opening new opportunities for empowerment.

PM Shehbaz also acknowledged contributions from the State Bank of Pakistan, the IT Ministry, Pakistani banks, and development partners. He said, “We are not just disbursing aid; we are building a nation with an empowered population.”
