Rawal Dam Spillways Opened After Heavy Rainfall: Public Alert Issued

Rawal Dam Spillways Opened After Heavy Rainfall

Authorities issued a public safety alert on Wednesday after the spillways of Rawal Dam were opened at 11:00 a.m. due to a rise in water levels following heavy rainfall.

According to official sources, the Rawal dam’s water level reached 1750.90 feet, prompting the controlled release. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) had earlier informed all concerned departments about a possible surge in Korang Nullah downstream.

The NDMA has urged residents living near Korang Nullah to remain cautious. People have been advised not to cross the nullah or use makeshift bridges, especially during high water flow.

The decision to open the spillways was taken in consultation with the district administration, Rescue 1122, and the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA).

Teams from these departments have been deployed at critical points, including bridges and low-lying areas, to manage water flow and ensure public safety. Emergency staff are actively monitoring the situation.

Officials confirmed that this measure is part of a broader flood management strategy during the ongoing monsoon season. The Rawal Dam, which supplies water to both Islamabad and Rawalpindi, also plays a vital role in rainwater regulation and flood control.

Weather officials have forecast further rainfall in the coming days. Authorities have stated that more water could be released if required. Citizens are urged to stay informed through official updates and follow safety instructions.

Parents have been asked to keep children away from water bodies. Motorists are advised to avoid driving through flooded areas.

Officials at the Rawal dam are monitoring the inflow and outflow round the clock. Engineers have assured that all steps are being taken to maintain dam safety and reduce downstream risk.

Further updates will be provided as the situation develops.

The prime minister also directed authorities to stay alert, especially with forecasts of more heavy rain in several regions, including Punjab. Full PDMA alerts for the province are available here.
