Govt Ensuring Safe, Smooth Travel for Pilgrims to Iraq, Iran: Khawaja Asif

Safe & Smooth Travel for Pilgrims to Iraq, Iran Khawaja Asif

ISLAMABAD — Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has announced that the government is taking all necessary steps to ensure safe and smooth travel for pilgrims going to Iraq and Iran for the Arbaeen pilgrimage.

Speaking in the National Assembly, Khawaja Asif said the government prioritizes the safety and convenience of the pilgrims. He added that relevant departments have been instructed to make proper arrangements for a trouble-free journey.

Due to serious security concerns, including threats of terrorist attacks on pilgrim convoys, the government has banned overland travel along the 800-kilometre route from Quetta.

Instead, the federal government has authorized the Balochistan government to operate direct flights from Quetta to Iran and Iraq.

The minister informed the House that one direct flight has already started, and the government aims to increase this to at least one regular flight daily or possibly two. This is to meet the growing demand of pilgrims wanting to travel safely by air.

Arrangements have also been made to provide onward transport from airports in Iran and Iraq to the pilgrims’ final destinations. Advertisements inviting private airlines to operate on this route have been published recently. All licensed private carriers are allowed to provide flights, including chartered ones, to maximize travel options.

Khawaja Asif explained that these measures aim to offer the best facilities for pilgrims while avoiding the risks linked with road travel. He encouraged airlines and market players to take full advantage of the permissions granted.

Furthermore, during a recent visit by the Iranian president to Pakistan, discussions were held on this matter. Iran has agreed to add an extra flight to help Pakistani pilgrims.

The Defence Minister assured the nation that the government is fully committed to providing safe, comfortable, and timely transportation for all Arbaeen pilgrims.
