Murree: The district administration has announced that Section 144 will be enforced in Murree from August 12 to 14 to maintain law and order during Independence Day celebrations.
Every year, Pakistan marks Independence Day on August 14 with nationwide enthusiasm. Popular tourist spots, especially hill stations like Murree, attract large crowds during the holiday period. Authorities expect a significant number of visitors this year, prompting them to take special security and crowd management measures.
According to officials, the restriction will remain in effect for three days. Families, however, will be exempt from the ban on August 14 and will be allowed to visit Mall Road. The administration explained that this decision aims to prevent overcrowding and ensure public safety while allowing families to enjoy the celebrations.
The move comes as part of a broader plan to control traffic flow, avoid congestion, and reduce the risk of untoward incidents. Law enforcement agencies have been directed to strictly implement the order, and additional personnel will be deployed at entry points and public gathering areas.
Murree, a renowned hill station situated in the Galyat region of the Pir Panjal Range, draws thousands of tourists annually for its breathtaking scenery and refreshing climate. The city is known for its Tudor-style and neo-gothic architecture, pleasant summer weather, and historical significance.
Since Pakistan’s independence in 1947, Murree has remained a top tourist choice. It also serves as a gateway for visitors traveling to Azad Kashmir and Abbottabad. The town’s popularity peaks during national holidays, often leading to overcrowding and traffic jams.
Officials have urged citizens to cooperate with security personnel during the restriction period. They also advised visitors to plan their trips accordingly and avoid unnecessary gatherings to ensure a safe environment for all.
Local businesses have expressed mixed reactions to the enforcement of Section 144. While some fear a drop in sales due to limited public access, others believe the move will help maintain order and prevent incidents that could harm tourism in the long run.
Murree has also been a preferred destination for government retreats and foreign dignitaries over the years. The Government of Pakistan maintains an official summer retreat in the city, which has hosted several heads of state and international guests.
The district administration stressed that the decision was made solely for public safety and not to discourage tourism. They added that all visitors are welcome, provided they follow the rules and cooperate with the authorities.
Independence Day festivities in Murree are expected to include flag-hoisting ceremonies, cultural performances, and illuminated landmarks. However, these events will be organized under strict security protocols to ensure a peaceful celebration.
Officials will review the situation after August 14 to decide on any further measures if necessary.
