SSGC Calls Off Gas Shutdown for August 14

SSGC Calls Off Gas Shutdown for August 14

KARACHI: Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) has cancelled its earlier announced gas suspension in parts of Karachi for August 14. The company confirmed that gas supply will remain normal on Independence Day.

The decision reverses an earlier plan for a 14-hour shutdown in District West. The suspension was scheduled from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

The shutdown was planned to relocate a gas pipeline. The work was to be carried out at the request of the Karachi Water Board. The Water Board’s related pipeline restoration activities have also been put on hold.

In its earlier notice, SSGC had listed several areas expected to be affected. These included Haroonabad SITE Area, Sher Shah, SITE, Jehanabad, Mianwali Colony, Lashari Mohalla, Metroville, Bawani Chali, Pathan Colony, Old Golimar, Rexer Colony, Hasan Oliya, and Muslimabad. The notice also mentioned SITE Industrial Area, Gulbai, Mauripur, Tikri Village, and Muslim Colony.

The shutdown was expected to affect both residential and industrial consumers. Many industries in the SITE Industrial Area rely on continuous gas supply for production. A suspension could have caused operational delays.

SSGC issued a statement on Wednesday to confirm the cancellation. The company said the decision was made to facilitate consumers during the national holiday. It added that uninterrupted supply will help residents and industries mark the Independence Day without difficulty.

An SSGC spokesperson clarified that the earlier statement issued on Tuesday should now be considered withdrawn. The spokesperson said the company will announce a new date for the pipeline relocation work in the future. Consumers will be informed in advance to make necessary arrangements.

The planned work was part of maintenance and infrastructure upgrades in the gas network. Such shutdowns are usually scheduled to allow safe completion of technical tasks. However, the company said public convenience was a priority in this case.

SSGC has advised consumers to keep following its official updates. Information on future shutdowns will be issued through press releases, website notices, and social media channels.

Karachi experiences periodic gas suspensions for maintenance and development work. These are often carried out in coordination with other city departments such as the Water Board. Authorities say the work is necessary to ensure safe and reliable gas supply.

The August 14 cancellation means normal gas supply will continue across all previously listed areas. No disruption is expected for households, businesses, or industries on the day.

SSGC supplies natural gas to Sindh and Balochistan. It manages both distribution to domestic and commercial consumers, and maintenance of pipelines and related infrastructure.

The company’s latest decision removes concerns for thousands of consumers in the city’s west. Independence Day activities, including family gatherings and industrial operations, will proceed without the impact of a planned suspension.
