Sutlej River Flood Devastates Bahawalnagar, Homes and Crops Destroyed

BAHAWALNAGAR: The Sutlej River flood has caused severe destruction in Bahawalnagar district, leaving hundreds of villages underwater. Thousands of residents have been forced to abandon their homes.

Chishtian city is among the worst-affected areas as the river swells to dangerous levels. Strong currents have caused rapid erosion, and protective embankments at Motianwala Pattan and Moza Azeem have collapsed. These breaches have submerged over 100 villages, destroying hundreds of houses.

Nearly 10,000 acres of standing crops have been washed away. Key roads connecting local settlements have also been swept under water, isolating many communities. Thousands of displaced residents are appealing for immediate relief.

Authorities have launched a large-scale rescue operation under the supervision of the district police. Officials report that over 80% of the affected population and livestock have been relocated to safer areas.

Water levels continue to rise under the Baba Farid and Bhookan Pattan Bridges. Floodwaters have breached embankments at Chaweka and Bahadurka, inundating settlements such as Chak Chaweka and Chak Bahadurka. The flooding has destroyed vast tracts of crops and disrupted daily life.

The Chaweka Sutlej Road has been washed away, cutting off ground transportation to the surrounding areas. Authorities confirmed that more than 150,000 cusecs of water are currently flowing in from Head Sulemanki, intensifying the crisis further.

The Sutlej River flood in Bahawalnagar highlights the urgent need for effective flood management and disaster response. Local authorities continue to monitor water levels and coordinate relief efforts to protect lives and property.
